I got a senFrancis2ase of a man that was very uncomfortable in his own skin and was trying to shed his own skin and become something more powerful and greater than he really was, and that was the starting point and it became a theme running through … all of the character to the point when I actually did put on a new skin, which was the dragon, the beginning of the dragon’s creation … (Hannibal Comic Con San Diego Panel #2 – Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy, Martha De Laurentiis, Richard Armitage (July 11, 2015))

Francis4aI actually don’t find the William Blake paintings particularly disturbing. I think they’re really quite celebratory and, and marvelous, but I’ve used Francisco Goya’s Saturn painting a number of times for different roles. There’s just something about that image which comes back into my head frequently, like a piece of music that you rely on to stimulate a response, and that’s the picture for me, and actually used it for Red Dragon as well – as the Blake. (Hannibal Comic Con San Diego Panel #2 – Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy, Martha De Laurentiis, Richard Armitage (July 11, 2015))

I think my lingering memory of behind the scenes is being in the make-up truck with Katie Brennan and Carolla, her assistant, who applied the full-body tattoo on a number of occasions and were both knelt at my naked backside painting, painting the crack. (laughter) Um … and then at the end of the day having to scrub it off with, with hot towels and being very intimate with those two wonderful people. (laughter and applause) Not that intimate, but … (laughter and applause) (Hannibal Comic Con San Diego Panel #2 – Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy, Martha De Laurentiis, Richard Armitage (July 11, 2015))
